The Seven Habits of Successful Weight Loss Surgery Patients

January 12, 2012

Bariatric surgery is often referred to as a tool toward weight loss. Ever wonder how to best use this tool or what other tools will lead to the best outcomes? We have put together a list of 7 essential components to maximize your weight loss and overall health. 1. Follow-up. The importance of life-long follow-up with the surgeon cannot be understated. It has been proven to dramatically increase weight loss, especially with the Lap-Band procedure. It provides accountability and education, but also can prevent medical concerns from becoming severe. 2. Understand how it works. The Gastric Bypass, the Sleeve Gastrectomy and the Lap-Band provide satiety through a mechanical component: The procedures create a smaller stomach, leading to faster satiety with little food. However, not all foods are created equal. Solid protein sources, such as fish, seafood, legumes, poultry, pork and beef will empty slowly out of the stomach, leading to long-lasting satiety – simple carbs will leave you hungry again within an hour. Thus, we recommend eating protein first, then veggies and rarely starches and fruit. Thin soups, even though... Read More

Going Strong: Weight Loss Surgery Exercise Program at Griffin Bariatrics

July 27, 2011

At Griffin Hospital, we understand the struggles of adopting a healthy lifestyle, particularly when it comes to exercise. Finding a gym that has staff that recognizes the challenges and health concerns of obesity can be difficult. Due to the popularity of the inspiring and judgment-free Bariatric Exercise Program at Griffin Hospital, the specialized team of exercise physiologists has been expanded. Three exercise physiologists evaluate each person, develop an individual exercise plan and help them progress. Further, new weekend and evening hours make participation more convenient. Eunice Lisk, MS, staff exercise physiologist overseeing the program, sees the incredible strides that patients make every day: “Working with the bariatric patients has been such a delight. I have learned so much from them and hope that I have been able to help them along their journey of weight loss and continued health”. Encouraging and Supportive Staff Please join us in welcoming our newest exercise physiologist, Tom Kavanagh. Tom is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine. He attended Southern Connecticut State University for Exercise Science with a concentration in Human Performance.... Read More

Expanding Customer Service for Weight Loss Surgery in Connecticut

July 14, 2011

At Griffin Bariatrics, we understand that it can be very difficult navigating required pre-operative appointments, keeping track of support groups and other available resources, and staying informed with the latest recommendations as they relate to nutrition, vitamin intake, healthy lifestyle, and follow-up.  Weight loss surgery, regardless if you had the Gastric Bypass, the Lap-Band® Surgery or the Gastric Sleeve Procedure, requires long-term follow-up and requires support and a comprehensive exercise program for the best possible outcomes.   Kim Fisher, Bariatric Care Specialist, is the newest member of our team.  Kim’s role is to help preoperative and postoperative clients acquire the most out of the services offered through Griffin Bariatrics and ensure that all clients’ needs are being met. Organizing support services and events, such as free Seminars, Health Fairs, exercise classes and the On Track Program, are all part of Kim’s responsibilities.   She is committed to adding additional support services as the need arises and is looking forward to hearing your recommendations and ideas to continue to provide outstanding, long-term bariatric support services. Kim reviews education materials and provides resources to... Read More
